Service Overview

Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad Extreme 2 thermal restoration

Our $75 thermal-pad service is not performed with inexpensive generic bulk material. We use Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad Extreme 2, a premium high-performance thermal pad, individually measured, cut and fitted to the required thermal-contact locations inside the PlayStation 3.

Every thermal-pad location is treated as an engineered thermal interface. Pad thickness, component height, contact area, material compressibility and final assembly pressure all affect whether heat is actually transferred away from the component effectively.

We do not simply cut approximate squares from a universal thermal-pad sheet and call it a thermal upgrade.

Why we use Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad Extreme 2

Minus Pad Extreme 2 is Thermal Grizzly's premium thermal-pad material designed for demanding thermal applications. It is engineered around high thermal performance, low thermal-interface resistance and excellent conformity between the heat-producing component and the surface receiving that heat.

The material uses a combination of aluminum oxide, aluminum hydroxide and aluminum powder with different particle sizes designed to improve thermal transfer through the pad and across the mating surfaces.

  • Manufacturer: Thermal Grizzly.
  • Product: Minus Pad Extreme 2.
  • Application: High-performance thermal interface material.
  • Electrically non-conductive: appropriate for use around densely populated electronics.
  • Soft and conformable: designed to adapt closely to uneven component and mating surfaces.
  • Long-term stability: designed not to cure or harden during normal service life.
  • Multiple thicknesses: allows the correct material thickness to be selected for different thermal gaps throughout the console.

Sony's original thermal pads are actually very good

We do not automatically replace healthy factory Sony thermal pads.

Sony used surprisingly durable thermal-interface material in these consoles. Even after many years of operation, we regularly find original pads that remain flexible, structurally intact and capable of maintaining proper contact.

If an original Sony pad is still clean, compliant, undamaged and showing proper contact, there may be no meaningful reason to remove it.

Replacing a good factory thermal pad with an inexpensive aftermarket pad simply because the replacement is newer can actually be a downgrade.

That is why we inspect the original material first. If it is still doing its job, we are perfectly comfortable leaving it in place.

When thermal-pad replacement makes sense

Replacement becomes worthwhile when the original material is no longer mechanically or thermally performing as intended.

  • Pad is cracked, splitting or beginning to crumble.
  • Material has been torn during previous disassembly.
  • Sections of the original pad are missing.
  • Pad has hardened or lost its ability to conform.
  • Material is permanently crushed or excessively deformed.
  • Pad is contaminated with dirt, oil, adhesive or repair residue.
  • Incorrect generic material was installed during a previous repair.
  • Contact or compression is visibly inconsistent.
  • The customer wants the complete premium thermal restoration while the console is already fully disassembled.

Every pad is individually cut and fitted

We do not use one universal size or thickness throughout the PlayStation 3.

Each Minus Pad Extreme 2 piece is measured and cut specifically for the component or thermal-contact area it is intended to service. The goal is complete coverage of the intended surface without unnecessary overlap onto surrounding components, solder joints or mechanical structures.

Different locations can also require different material thicknesses. The appropriate thickness is selected according to the physical gap being bridged rather than forcing one thickness to work everywhere.

Exact fitment matters just as much as using premium material.

Thickness is critical

Thermal conductivity alone does not determine whether a thermal pad will work correctly. Even an excellent thermal material can perform poorly if the wrong thickness is installed.

If a pad is too thin, it may receive insufficient compression or may not contact the opposing surface completely. Any remaining air gap dramatically increases thermal resistance.

If a pad is too thick, it can create excessive mechanical pressure, distort shielding, alter motherboard seating or change the clamping geometry of neighboring thermal interfaces.

This means proper thermal-pad replacement is both a thermal and mechanical fitment job.

Compression is part of the thermal interface

Thermal pads are designed to compress between the component and the mating cooling surface. Correct compression removes insulating air gaps and increases the effective contact area available for heat transfer.

Minus Pad Extreme 2 is particularly useful because its soft, conformable material can adapt to small surface and component-height variations while maintaining thermal contact.

The objective is not maximum compression. The objective is correct compression: enough pressure to create complete contact without unnecessarily loading the motherboard, shielding or surrounding components.

Why material quality matters

A thermal pad does not cool a component simply because it touches it. Heat must travel from the component into the thermal pad, through the pad material and then from the pad into the receiving metal surface.

Each of those interfaces introduces thermal resistance.

This is why actual material quality, conformity, thickness tolerance and interface contact matter more than simply buying a pad with an impressive number printed on the package.

For a premium Frankenstein restoration, we prefer a known high-performance thermal material from an established manufacturer rather than introducing unknown generic material into a console we expect to remain in service long term.

What do the thermal pads cool?

The CELL and RSX receive most of the attention in a PlayStation 3 because they generate a large portion of the system's heat, but they are not the only components requiring thermal management.

Supporting semiconductor, memory and power circuitry throughout the motherboard also generates heat. Thermal pads provide a controlled path for that heat to move into metal shielding and other chassis structures capable of absorbing and distributing it.

Maintaining these secondary thermal interfaces helps reduce localized heat accumulation and keeps the complete thermal design operating properly instead of focusing only on the two primary processors.

Why does the service cost $75?

Because this is not a $75 bag of generic thermal pads.

We stock genuine Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad Extreme 2 material in the thicknesses required for our restoration work. The material itself is a premium product, and every replacement interface must then be individually inspected, measured, cut, positioned and checked for proper compression during assembly.

The service includes:

  • Inspection of the original Sony thermal pads before replacement.
  • Identification of which thermal interfaces actually need attention.
  • Removal of damaged, contaminated or incorrect material.
  • Cleaning of the component and mating surfaces.
  • Selection of the appropriate Minus Pad Extreme 2 thickness.
  • Measurement of the required thermal-contact area.
  • Individual cutting of each replacement pad.
  • Careful positioning of every thermal interface.
  • Verification of pad compression and physical contact.
  • Final verification that motherboard, shielding and heatsink geometry remain correct after assembly.

The $75 service is a complete secondary thermal-interface restoration using premium Thermal Grizzly material, cut and fitted specifically for the console rather than generic material installed approximately.

Premium replacement versus keeping the originals

There are two completely valid approaches depending on the condition of the console.

If the original Sony pads are still excellent: we can leave them alone. They are quality OEM thermal components and replacing them simply to say they are new provides no meaningful benefit.

If the original pads are deteriorated, previously disturbed or the customer wants the complete no-compromise restoration: we replace them with Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad Extreme 2 material that is properly thickness-matched and individually fitted to the required locations.

The premium option: do it once and forget about it

For a premium Frankenstein build, this service is essentially the do-it-once-and-forget-about-it option.

While the console is already completely disassembled, the aging secondary thermal interfaces can be inspected and renewed using known premium material instead of reinstalling questionable or deteriorating pads and wondering about them later.

This does not mean we believe every original Sony pad must be replaced. It means that when replacement is justified, we use material worthy of the rest of the restoration.

Part of the complete PS3 thermal system

A PlayStation 3 cooling system is a chain of thermal interfaces. Each stage must move heat efficiently into the next:

  • Silicon die: where heat is generated.
  • Internal chip thermal interface: transfers heat into the heat spreader where applicable.
  • External thermal compound: transfers processor heat into the primary heatsinks.
  • Thermal pads: bridge larger gaps between supporting components and chassis cooling structures.
  • Heatsinks and shielding: absorb and distribute thermal energy.
  • Cooling fan: moves accumulated heat out of the chassis.

A weakness anywhere in this thermal path increases thermal resistance. Proper thermal-pad fitment ensures the supporting components are not ignored while the CELL and RSX receive the majority of the restoration work.

Best for

  • Premium Frankenstein restorations receiving complete thermal renewal.
  • Consoles with damaged, cracked, hardened or missing Sony thermal pads.
  • Systems previously serviced using questionable aftermarket materials.
  • Collectors who want aging thermal interfaces addressed while the console is already disassembled.
  • Customers who want premium material installed once rather than revisiting the thermal pads later.

Our approach

Good Sony pads stay. Bad pads get replaced properly.

We are not interested in replacing a high-quality factory component with an inferior aftermarket part just to increase the repair invoice. If the originals remain healthy, they can continue doing their job.

When replacement is justified, or when a customer requests the complete premium restoration, we use Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad Extreme 2, properly matched in thickness and individually cut to the required size and location.

If we're replacing good OEM-quality thermal interfaces, we're replacing them with something worthy of the rest of the build.
