Service Overview
The APS-226 is our preferred high-headroom power supply for compatible FAT PlayStation 3 restoration builds. It provides the same approximately 399-watt total rated output capacity as the early ZSSR539IA supply, but with dramatically better electrical efficiency and substantially less energy being converted into waste heat inside the console.
The early ZSSR539IA and APS-226 are both capable of approximately 384 watts on the primary 12V rail, but their electrical designs are very different. Published PS3 PSU specifications list the ZSSR539IA at approximately 66.5% efficiency while the APS-226 is listed at approximately 83.13%.
A power supply does not simply deliver power to the motherboard. Any energy lost during AC-to-DC conversion becomes heat. In an early FAT PS3, that heat is released directly inside the same chassis containing the CELL processor, RSX, motherboard, voltage regulators and BGA assemblies.
Reducing PSU conversion loss therefore reduces one source of internal thermal loading. Less PSU-generated heat means the cooling system has less total heat to remove and reduces unnecessary heat soak around the motherboard and surrounding components.
The ZSSR539IA is one of the least desirable power supplies found in early backward-compatible PS3 hardware. Although it has substantial output capacity, its lower conversion efficiency means considerably more electrical energy can be dissipated as heat.
The APS-226 retains the large 32A 12V rail and approximately 399W total capacity while offering a much more efficient design. For a premium CECHA01, CECHB01 or other compatible Frankenstein restoration, this makes the APS-226 an excellent choice when maximum electrical headroom is desired.
A Frankenstein conversion can substantially reduce the RSX portion of the console's power demand, but we still prefer to maintain generous PSU headroom whenever possible. The APS-226 combines strong 12V capacity with improved efficiency, making it particularly well suited to heavily restored backward-compatible systems.
Important: PSU compatibility is verified by motherboard revision, electrical connector configuration and completed system power requirements before installation.
