Service Overview
$190 Complete Rebuilt APS-226 — No Core Required
$125 Rebuild Service — Use Your Existing APS-226
Our APS-226 Modernized Reconditioned Power Supply service is designed for customers who want more than another unknown 15- to 20-year-old PlayStation 3 power supply.
Each APS-226 is completely disassembled and rebuilt at the component level using modern power semiconductors, new high-voltage capacitors, updated rectification and renewed thermal interfaces while retaining Sony's original circuit architecture.
The primary goal is long-term restoration and reliability: renew the major power-handling components, replace aging high-voltage capacitors, restore the heatsink interfaces and return the APS-226 to excellent electrical and thermal condition.
Complete Modernized APS-226 — $190
We supply the APS-226, perform the complete modernization and testing process, and provide you with a finished ready-to-install rebuilt power supply.
No core exchange is required.
This is the best option if your console currently has a ZSSR, another early PSU, or you simply want a ready-to-install fully rebuilt APS-226.
Rebuild Your Existing APS-226 — $125
If your console already has an APS-226, you can send us your existing supply and we will perform the same component-level modernization and reconditioning process on your unit.
Supplying your own APS-226 saves $65 compared with purchasing a complete rebuilt unit from us.
The APS-226 remains one of the highest-capacity power supplies used in the original PlayStation 3 and provides substantial electrical headroom for backwards-compatible FAT systems and premium Frankenstein builds.
The problem is age.
These supplies are now approaching two decades old. Even a fully functional original APS-226 still contains high-voltage electrolytic capacitors, switching devices and thermal interfaces that have experienced years of heat cycling and operating time.
Rather than replacing one aging PSU with another untouched used unit, this service renews the major power-handling sections of the APS-226 using modern components selected for appropriate voltage margin, switching performance, thermal behavior and long-term service.
Our controlled testing shows that the Modernized APS-226 operates somewhat cooler than a stock APS-226, although thermal performance is not the primary reason we recommend this service.
With the console fully assembled and normal chassis airflow active, our current stabilized observations have generally been:
The result is clear:
The APS-231 remains our preferred PSU when minimizing PSU temperature is the primary goal.
However, the APS-231 is a lower-capacity supply and we only recommend it in properly undervolted, reduced-power Frankenstein systems where total console demand has already been lowered and verified.
The Modernized APS-226 fills a different role.
It retains the substantial output headroom of the APS-226 while replacing many of the aging components responsible for long-term PSU wear and restoring the complete thermal interface.
We also performed a separate saturation test with the PSU exposed and without the console's normal active cooling airflow assisting it.
Under the same console configuration, processor voltage settings and load:
That produced an approximately 3.5°C reduction under passive saturation conditions.
This test allowed both supplies to heat-soak without the console's normal airflow reducing or masking the difference.
We have also encountered older and more heavily used original PS3 power supplies that become extremely hot and can eventually enter thermal protection or shut down under sustained load.
The Modernized APS-226 used during development successfully completed extended sustained-load testing without thermal shutdown or instability.
These temperatures are shop observations and are not guaranteed operating temperatures.
Actual temperature varies with ambient conditions, console configuration, processor voltage, fan behavior, system load, PSU condition and measurement location.
The thermal improvement is useful, but reliability and long-term restoration are the primary reasons this service exists.
The objective is to remove as many aging high-stress components as practical from the original PSU and replace them with new, modern equivalents while preserving Sony's proven circuit architecture.
Major high-voltage capacitors are replaced rather than reused.
Major switching and rectification devices are renewed or modernized.
The heatsink interfaces are completely cleaned and serviced.
The finished supply is electrically inspected, bench tested and operated under real console load before being placed back into service.
The result is a professionally reconditioned APS-226 intended for customers who would rather install a rebuilt and tested supply than rely on another untouched used PSU of the same age.
Both supplies have a place in our Frankenstein builds.
APS-231 — Best Thermal Option
The APS-231 remains our preferred choice when reducing PSU operating temperature is the priority.
Because of its lower output capacity, we only use the APS-231 in properly undervolted and reduced-power Frankenstein systems after total system demand has been lowered and verified.
Modernized APS-226 — Best High-Headroom / Restoration Option
The Modernized APS-226 is the better choice when substantial electrical headroom, renewed components and long-term PSU reliability are the priority.
This makes it particularly attractive as a replacement for ZSSR-equipped systems and other configurations where installing the lower-capacity APS-231 would not be appropriate.
Our PSU strategy is therefore simple:
Properly undervolted / reduced-power Frankenstein
→ APS-231
Higher-draw system / ZSSR replacement / maximum electrical headroom
→ Modernized APS-226
We select the PSU based on the electrical configuration of the finished console rather than pretending one model is automatically the best choice for every system.
This is not simply a recap.
This is not a used PSU with fresh thermal paste.
This is not marketed around unrealistic guaranteed temperature claims.
It is a component-level modernization and reconditioning service designed to preserve the APS-226 platform while replacing many of the components most affected by age, heat cycling and long-term operation.
