1.0mm ASA CELL + RSX motherboard support bracers

Our CELL and RSX bracer upgrade adds precision-fit structural support beneath the primary processor areas of the FAT PlayStation 3 motherboard.

These are not pressure pads, an "eraser mod," or a method of forcing a damaged BGA connection back together. The bracers are designed around a completely different principle: support the motherboard in areas where the original metal backplate leaves an unsupported span while maintaining the factory clamping geometry.

At only $20 during a complete Frankenstein restoration, this is one of the simplest preventative structural upgrades we offer.

Sony already used this idea

The concept of supporting the motherboard underneath the CELL area is not something invented as an aftermarket PS3 modification.

Sony-refurbished PlayStation 3 hardware has been documented with CELL support bracers installed beneath the processor area. The purpose is to support the motherboard inside the opening of the existing metal backplate rather than allowing the center section of the PCB to remain unsupported.

The important part is how that support is implemented.

The bracer should support the PCB. It should not push upward on the processor.

Why exactly 1.0mm matters

The PS3 processor backplate uses approximately 1.0mm standoffs that establish the spacing between the motherboard and metal support structure.

Our bracers are designed around that same 1.0mm finished support height.

This is critical because the objective is to bridge the unsupported area while preserving the original mechanical geometry.

  • Correct thickness: supports the PCB without intentionally changing clamping pressure.
  • Too thin: may provide little or no meaningful support.
  • Too thick: can apply unwanted upward force beneath the processor area.

We do not believe in adding excessive pressure underneath a CELL or RSX. Excessive pressure can distort the motherboard, alter heatsink clamping geometry and place additional mechanical load on the processor package.

The purpose of a properly fitted bracer is support, not pressure.

Not an eraser mod

This distinction is extremely important.

Older PS3 repair tricks sometimes involved placing compressible material underneath a processor or motherboard in an attempt to force a failing connection back into contact.

That is not what we are doing.

Forcing upward pressure underneath a BGA package is not a legitimate repair for cracked solder joints, a failed RSX or internal semiconductor damage.

Our bracers are not intended to bend the motherboard toward the heatsink or increase die pressure. They are dimensioned to occupy existing unsupported space and help the board remain mechanically supported during normal assembly.

Why motherboard flex matters

A FAT PlayStation 3 motherboard is a large multilayer PCB carrying two substantial processor packages, heatsink clamping hardware, metal shielding and numerous power components.

The board experiences mechanical loading from:

  • Heatsink clamping force.
  • Processor backplates and leaf springs.
  • Repeated heating and cooling cycles.
  • Console disassembly and reassembly.
  • Handling during repair.
  • Shipping and transportation.
  • The weight and geometry of the complete motherboard assembly.

A PCB does not need to visibly bend like a piece of plastic for mechanical strain to exist. Even small amounts of local deflection around a large BGA package can change how forces are distributed through the board and package structure.

Why support both CELL and RSX?

Sony's refurbishment bracer strategy is most commonly associated with the CELL processor area. On our premium restoration builds, we take the same basic structural-support principle and apply it to both the CELL and RSX areas where the motherboard layout allows proper fitment.

The CELL and RSX are the two largest and most mechanically significant semiconductor packages on the board. Our philosophy is simple: if an unsupported area can be properly supported without altering factory clamping pressure, there is little reason to leave that area unsupported during a complete premium restoration.

This is particularly relevant on a Frankenstein build where significant board-level work has already been completed around the RSX.

Especially appropriate after a Frankenstein RSX conversion

A Frankenstein RSX conversion is one of the most extensive repairs that can be performed on a PlayStation 3 motherboard.

The original RSX is removed, the BGA site is prepared, a replacement processor is installed and the complete thermal and electrical configuration is rebuilt around the new hardware.

Once that level of work has been completed, our goal is to return the motherboard to the chassis with as much mechanical support as reasonably possible.

The RSX bracer does not make the BGA stronger and it cannot prevent every possible future failure. What it can do is provide additional support beneath an area of the PCB that would otherwise rely primarily on the surrounding backplate geometry.

Why ASA?

We manufacture these supports from ASA engineering thermoplastic rather than ordinary low-temperature PLA.

ASA is widely used for mechanically durable printed parts and offers substantially better elevated-temperature stability than basic PLA materials. That makes it much better suited to a component that will remain permanently installed inside an electronics enclosure experiencing years of repeated heating and cooling cycles.

For this application we care about several material properties:

  • Temperature resistance: suitable for the elevated internal temperatures of an operating PS3.
  • Dimensional stability: the bracer must maintain its intended geometry.
  • Mechanical rigidity: sufficient to provide structural PCB support.
  • Durability: intended to remain installed for the long term.
  • Electrical isolation: polymer construction avoids creating a conductive metal support underneath densely populated circuitry.

Precision fitment matters

The RSX side in particular cannot simply use a generic square piece of plastic.

Different motherboard revisions contain surface-mounted components and ceramic decoupling capacitors around the processor area. The bracer must be shaped and oriented so it supports the correct PCB area without interfering with surrounding components.

Fitment is therefore checked for the specific motherboard revision before installation.

Designed to support, not preload

We cannot emphasize this enough: more pressure is not better.

A correctly fitted bracer should sit within the factory mechanical spacing established by the PS3 backplate.

It is not intended to:

  • Force a broken BGA joint back into contact.
  • Push the CELL or RSX toward the heatsink.
  • Increase heatsink clamping pressure.
  • Correct an improperly installed processor.
  • Compensate for a bad delid or incorrect thermal-stack height.

Those problems must be corrected properly during the restoration.

The bracer's job is much simpler: give the motherboard additional structural support underneath the processor area while preserving the intended assembly geometry.

Why only $20?

The motherboard is already completely removed during a Frankenstein conversion, so installation requires very little additional disassembly.

That allows us to offer the CELL + RSX bracer package for only $20.

On a premium restoration involving hundreds of dollars of processor, BGA, thermal and power-system work, this is one of the lowest-cost ways to add another layer of mechanical consideration to the completed build.

Will a $20 bracer magically prevent every future failure? No.

But when the console is already completely apart and we can add correctly dimensioned support beneath the two largest processor areas without altering factory clamping pressure, we consider it a very reasonable addition to a long-term restoration.

Our recommendation

For $20, this is one of the easiest upgrades for us to recommend on a complete Frankenstein build.

Sony themselves recognized the value of supporting the CELL area in refurbished hardware. Our approach carries that support philosophy further by fitting both CELL and RSX support where the motherboard revision allows it.

We are already investing significant time and money into the RSX, BGA work, thermal system and power configuration. Adding properly fitted 1.0mm ASA supports underneath the primary processor areas is inexpensive by comparison.

It does not add performance, it does not magically repair a BGA, and it does not make the console indestructible. It simply gives an expensive restored motherboard additional structural support where we believe it makes sense.

For a premium build intended to last, we think that is $20 well spent.
