How It’s Done
PS3 Frankenstein APS-226 Modernized PSU Rebuild | Cooler + Load Tested
We modernized the Sony APS-226 at the component level and put it under sustained load in a high-draw launch PS3. The result: cooler PSU operation while retaining the APS-226's substantial electrical headroom.
PS3 Frankenstein APS-226 Modernized Power Supply Rebuild
The Frankenstein conversion does not have to stop at the RSX.
In this project we completely disassembled and modernized a Sony APS-226 power supply at the component level while retaining Sony's original circuit architecture and the substantial output headroom that makes the APS-226 such a strong power supply for backwards-compatible FAT PlayStation 3 systems.
This is substantially more than installing another used APS-226 or simply replacing the original thermal compound.
Component-Level PSU Modernization
The rebuild addresses the major power-handling and thermal sections of the APS-226, including:
- PFC power switching
- Primary switching stage
- Synchronous rectification
- High-speed rectification
- PFC boost diode modernization
- Bridge rectification
- High-voltage bulk capacitor renewal
- Heatsink and thermal-interface servicing
- Electrical isolation inspection
- Bench testing
- Sustained gaming and load testing
We intentionally do not publish the complete component substitution list or detailed modernization BOM.
Thermal Testing and Results
The Modernized APS-226 has now been tested under extended real-world load, including approximately 48 hours of continuous operation in a high-draw launch-model PS3 without thermal shutdown, failure or instability.
We also performed controlled comparison testing using the same console, same game workload, same CELL / RSX undervolts, same thermocouple probe placement, normal chassis airflow and approximately 45 minutes of sustained load to allow each PSU to reach thermal saturation.
Our current closed-console observations have generally been:
- APS-231: approximately 38–40°C
- Modernized APS-226: approximately 40–42°C
- Stock APS-226: approximately 42–43.6°C
The results show that the Modernized APS-226 operates somewhat cooler than a stock APS-226 while retaining the substantially greater output headroom of the APS-226 platform.
The APS-231 remains the lowest-temperature PSU option in a properly undervolted, reduced-power Frankenstein configuration.
Passive Thermal Saturation Test
We also performed a separate heat-soak test without the console's normal active airflow assisting either APS-226.
- Stock APS-226: approximately 60.5°C
- Modernized APS-226: approximately 57°C
That produced an approximately 3.5°C reduction under matched passive saturation conditions.
No specific operating temperature or temperature reduction is guaranteed.
Actual PSU temperature varies with ambient temperature, console configuration, processor voltage, system load, fan behavior, PSU condition and measurement location.
Reliability Is the Main Goal
The primary purpose of the APS-226 modernization is not to make an unrealistic cooling claim.
These power supplies are now approaching two decades old. Even a functioning original APS-226 still contains high-voltage capacitors, switching devices, rectifiers and thermal interfaces that have experienced years of heat cycling and operation.
The goal is to:
Renew aging power components
+ replace the high-voltage capacitor bank
+ restore thermal interfaces
+ retain substantial APS-226 output headroom
+ improve thermal behavior
+ verify the finished PSU under sustained load
We have also encountered older and more heavily used original PS3 power supplies that become extremely hot and can eventually enter thermal protection or shut down under sustained load.
The Modernized APS-226 used during development completed extended testing without thermal shutdown or instability.

APS-226 vs. APS-231
Both power supplies have a place in our Frankenstein builds.
APS-231 — Best Thermal Option
The APS-231 remains our preferred PSU when minimizing PSU operating temperature is the priority. Because of its lower output capacity, we only use it in properly undervolted and reduced-power Frankenstein systems.
Modernized APS-226 — Best High-Headroom / Restoration Option
The Modernized APS-226 is our preferred option when substantial electrical headroom, renewed major components and long-term PSU restoration are the priority.
This makes the Modernized APS-226 particularly attractive for ZSSR-equipped systems and other higher-draw configurations where the lower-capacity APS-231 would not be appropriate.
Where This Fits in a Premium Frankenstein Build
Our complete restoration strategy is cumulative:
40nm RSX conversion
→ NEC/TOKIN power rail rebuild
→ CELL / RSX undervolting
→ optimized thermal interfaces
→ upgraded cooling
→ correctly matched or modernized power supply
Reducing processor power is only part of controlling heat and long-term stress inside a FAT PS3.
The PSU should also be matched to the final electrical configuration of the console rather than simply installing whichever model happens to fit.
